There's a book out there on everything. For example, The Pencil : A History of Design and Circumstance.

I was thinking about these weighty matters as I loaded spare leads into my mechanical pencil this morning. The spares were by the venerable Koh-i-noor pencil company of Ceske Budejovice. I chewed on Koh-i-noor pencils when I was a kid in school. Little did I imagine I would end up one day visiting the place. They've been making pencils there since 1848 when they relocated from Vienna undoutedly to avoid the revolutionary politics of the time. Either that or they wanted to be closer to the beer.
